Office of Equal Opportunity
The George Washington University is committed to maintaining a positive climate for study and work, in which individuals can pursue their educational and workplace activities in an atmosphere that is free from discrimination, harassment, and violence. GW’s new Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO) is responsible for responding to reports of all forms of discrimination or harassment, including sexual assault, dating and domestic violence, and stalking, and supporting those who are impacted by such incidents. OEO is designed to enhance GW’s response to complaints of discrimination and harassment by centralizing the university’s response into one comprehensive office. Through centralization, OEO benefits the GW community by removing barriers to reporting, enhancing the management of intersectional complaints, and ensuring consistent and high quality support across the university.
OEO provides support and adjudication options in response to reports involving discrimination and/or harassment based on a protected characteristic, including but not limited to: age, color, disability, gender, gender identity or expression, genetic information, marital or familial status, national origin (including shared ancestry and ethnic characteristics), pregnancy, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, veteran status, and other characteristics protected by applicable law. OEO also provides support and adjudication options in response to reports involving sexual harassment, including sexual assault, dating and domestic violence, and stalking.
Our Programs
OEO oversees the university’s civil rights compliance responsibilities under federal and local laws, including Titles VI, VII, IX, the ADA/Section 504, and the DC Human Rights Act.
This website will be expanded in the coming months to be a central hub for information and resources in each of these areas. At this time, you may view reporting options and learn more about Title VI, Title VII, the ADA/Section 504, and the DC Human Rights Act; Title IX; and the university's Prohibited Relationships with Students policy.
